If you have a dog or a cat, you’ve probably had to contend with pet urine problems at some point. Even the most well-behaved pets occasionally leave a mess on a carpeted floor, and it can sometimes seem like these messes can be nearly impossible to clean up. Even when you’re able to clean up the spot as soon as you see it, it always seems to leave a stain or a bad smell that never goes away. In other words, your carpet is never the same.

As dire as all of this may sound, there are ways to deal with pet urine problems that can leave your carpet looking and smelling as good as new. It’s always best to act quickly when your beloved pet leaves a mess, but your carpet can be saved.

What You Can Do

The best way to deal with a pet urine problem is to clean as much of it as you can as soon as possible. Soak up the urine using paper towels or a cotton cloth. For best results, press into the spot using something disposable or something that you don’t care much about, such as an old shoe. This should get more of the urine into the cloth or paper towel. Once you’re sure you’ve soaked up as much of the urine as you can, pour a 50/50 mixture of white vinegar and water onto the spot and scrub it into your carpet. Soak up as much of the mixture as you can with another paper towel or cloth when you’re done.

If you’re dealing with a particularly bad pet urine problem, you can also sprinkle some baking soda onto the spot and scrub at it some more with a combination of hydrogen peroxide and dish soap. After the spot is dry, go over it with a vacuum.
